The  beginning  of  the  universe

I have always felt a strong attraction towards symbols and primal shapes. They seem to have a magnetic power that holds my attention. When I discovered this book a while back, I decided to start a new series of jewelry pieces based on symbolic imagery.

The first symbol I chose to work with is the egg, which in many creation myths represents the beginning of the universe. An egg is charged with energy, potential, growth and change. All qualities I have been reflecting on in my own work lately.

I begin my visual exploration with simple line drawings. Some will become three dimensional pieces.

I feel free when I work on a series. By narrowing my focus on a single theme, I can explore all the possibilities I can find. These are some of my first pieces, I will be adding more later.

My  favorite  model

When I was little, I wanted to be a model. My mom brought home fashion magazines from the US, and I dreamed of being on the cover. I wanted to be a part of an amazing production that resulted in a fascinating image. Since then, I have always observed beauty in faces and objects alike. Visual harmony fascinates me.

Since I began making jewelry, I've looked for interesting people to model my work. I met Iris when she came by my stand at Bazar Fusión two years ago and bought a ring. We became friends when a month later, she was my neighbor in the next Bazar. As it turned out, she is the talented designer behind Turleza, a gorgeous line of handbags and stationary. We became good friends, and she first modeled for my 2013 lookbook.
A week ago, Iris and I had another photo shoot on my rooftop. She is wearing pieces from my 2013 cast collection. As always, she looks natural and beautiful.

New  Studio  and  first  pieces  of  the  year

I feel whole again now that I am back in my studio. I am blessed to start the year in a new space, the biggest room in our apartment. This was my gift for the New Year. It is filled with light, and fits everything I need: a desk for my computer; a couch to read on with all my books in sight; a large work bench to cut, solder and forge; and a long furniture to study the pieces I am currently working on.

A powerful portrait of me, painted by Pedro Bonnín when I was twenty years old, hangs in a corner. The colorful paintings are by Lucas and Aureliano Lorenzo.

Inspired by my friend Esther, I decided to place objects I have been collecting in an old letterpress drawer I found at the Lagunilla, my favorite flea market in Mexico City, and hang it on my studio wall.

MUSIBATTY  2009 - 2011  Jewelry

As a visual person, I have always had a burning desire to create something that would make people stop and be present, in awe, like I had so many times before, in the presence of amazing objects of beauty created by someone else. Today, I feel fortunate enough to be touched by the work I do, knowing that it comes from a place deep within me, far beyond logic or plan.

It's been five years since I started making jewelry. To celebrate my path in this medium, I decided to go through images of some of my first collections and share my strongest work. As I look back on my photo archives, I am amazed that every one of these pieces found a home. I am so grateful for all of you who supported my work during this time. It is because of you that I continue to develop my craft and my vision as an artist. May you do also what you love, and may life support you on your path.

new  beginnings

The year 2013 is over. For me, it was a year of growth and expansion. A year that gave closure to what was the beginning of my path as a jeweler.

When I created my first jewelry collection in 2009, I was fortunate to find the perfect place to sell and show my work. This place was magical and festive. It was called Bazar Fusión, an itinerant design fair that lasted three days, and was held outdoors every couple of months in different parks in Mexico City. Manuel Sekkel and Caro Kopeloff created this joyful and vibrant event, emulating the design fairs that took place in Buenos Aires, their hometown.

Selling my work in Bazar Fusión allowed me to meet the people who bought my work. It was a great opportunity to get direct feedback and make new friends, and for many years I connected with a thriving creative community that continues to be an important part of my life.

About a year ago, when the city government made it increasingly difficult to get permits for Bazar Fusión to settle in city parks, Caro and Manu decided it was time to find a permanent home. They found and restored a magnificent mansion in the heart of the Colonia Juárez, and created Casa Fusión, offering each designer a space for rent. I joined the project, and opened my first store in June 2013.

Before I discovered jewelry design, I wanted to be an interior decorator. Designing my own store fulfilled that dream. I teamed up with my father (a wonderful architect), and together we designed the furniture and the display. The store combined antique objects I had collected from flea markets, with industrial inspired furniture made of steel and wood. The result was powerful and welcoming.

Not long after opening my store, I realized I had just created the type of job I had run away from years ago when I worked for other people, except it was now my own business. In order to have a larger production and meet demand, I was casting half of my collection at a local studio and finishing it at home. After months of spending my weekends at the store and working all week to make pieces to sell, I was sick and burned out. More than the long hours, what exhausted me was to see that my work was becoming more a production and less a personal exploration.

When I realized how my creativity was being affected, I decided to close my store, even when it continued to be very successful. I was sad to leave my community at Fusión. Caro and Manu were always very generous and supportive, but I felt it was time to move forward on my path as an artist.

Since then, I have taken time off to re-focus. My vision of what I can do, and where I can contribute the most is changing. The more I live, the more I realize that I can experience life on my own terms. I want to re-connect with my work on a more personal level, so that it is a path of self discovery.

The creative freedom I get from making one of a kind jewelry pieces and selling my work online, is more than I imagined. I can now learn, experiment, travel, and communicate more, and all of this enriches my vision and my art. In this New Year, I choose to do things that make me feel alive, brave and generous.
