I find nothing more empowering than the first mark I make when I draw on paper or chisel on metal. I feel determined, although I don’t know what will happen next. My hand moves as if by its own accord, and I witness the start of creation, a single line that can form an entire world. I think the first beings that made their mark on stone or wood must have also realized: I can make something! I can make something. I am a creator. Marked rings. Cast and handmade with 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. Calaveras. Aztec Marigolds. Copal incense. Candles that illuminate smoky cemeteries. Families with food and song. The departed. So many rings found homes today. Thank you for appreciating my work, and for allowing my creativity to develop. I am honored to give life to the beauty I see in my mind. May you feel uplifted every time you wear your ring, and may it always remind you that everything is possible! The more I work, the more I get inspired. Stratified ring. Handmade with Red Tiger Eye and 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. What would happen if you were suddenly 80 years old? If you experienced life from that perspective for a few hours, and then returned to the age you are now? You would be in awe of your physical agility, of the years you have left to enjoy, and of the people you can still love. You’d let yourself explore new paths. You’d appreciate every encounter, because you only have a few decades left to experience this diversity. You would stop to marvel at who you are, and at what you can create. Magic Portal ring. Handmade with Hawk's Eye and 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. I once realized that I was not willing to spend my life doing something that did not feel meaningful. So I spent years looking for a big goal that felt important, but when I found it, it did not motivate me for long. When I finally discovered the meaning of my life, it did not come from an outside source, it came from loving my path just as it is. The more I appreciate my life, the more it loves me back. In the evenings, Abhaya and I look at science and history documentaries. We joke that we are creating our own education, because school left such huge gaps in our understanding. Images of pyramids, desert sunsets, caves and mollusks, are starting to migrate from my unconscious mind to my jewelry. Red Desert ring. Handmade with red tiger eye and 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. Before our ancestors learnt to domesticate plants and animals, they created artifacts. If you have to survive an ice age, you need something beautiful to make you feel better. Ice ring. Handmade with tourmaline quartz and 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. I dream I am on a boat. It is carrying me into deeper waters. It is a journey I want to take. Others wait on the shore, but I no longer look back. Deep Water ring. Handmade with Jade and 100% recycled sterling silver. Soon in my online shop. In my twenties, I used to ask myself questions about my future: “What will I do with my life?” “Art,” a voice within answered. “Will it be any good?” I inquired. “Your work will be on the cover of a magazine,” was the answer. “Which one?” “Art in America,” I thought I heard the voice reply (I was a painter back then). Years later, I became a jeweler, and today my work is on the cover of Art Jewelry Magazine. I am grateful and surprised to see an idea I believed in materialize in such a wonderful publication. Art Jewelry Magazine offers tutorials for jewelers of all skill levels, but this issue is dedicated to beginners. My necklace is featured as an example of how entry-level techniques can be used to create a complex looking piece. I find this describes my work perfectly. In the six years I’ve made jewelry, I’ve learnt what I could with the resources I’ve had, and used my imagination as my biggest asset. As a visual artist, I’ve approached my jewelry as I would a drawing or a sculpture, focusing on the character of a piece, on its energy and its soul. I never intended to become a technical expert, I only wanted to make pieces that felt alive and mattered to someone. Check out the November 2015 issue of Art Jewelry Magazine. It is filled with amazing step-by-step tutorials (including how to make the Crescent necklace on the cover) and in-depth product reviews for jewelers. I just completed the final drawing for my 100 day project. I am grateful for the permission this challenge gave me to explore my imagination without setting limits or goals. I enjoyed making every single drawing. I always found inspiration, even when I feared I’d run out of ideas. I learnt to not judge my work because often, the drawings that did not go as planned ended up being my favorite. A part of me (my neck, mostly) is happy the challenge is over, drawing this much has filled me with new ideas, and I am looking forward to full days at my jewelry bench. Thank you for coming with me on this journey. I appreciate your generous encouragement and kindness. I hope that you too are inspired to travel inwards and discover the awesome treasures that lie within your imagination. |
