Good   Intentions

4/8/2015

I was going to name this necklace, Medusa. But in my research, I discovered she was a terrible, ugly monster who turned people to stone with her gaze, and if I don't want that image hanging around my neck, I imagine you don't either. So I will tell you another story instead, one that speaks about good intentions, which is what I had when I made this necklace.

The first time I cut my dad's hair I was eight. It began one day when he asked me for a head massage. I agreed, but only if he let me cut his hair. When he awoke, relaxed, he looked in the mirror and liked what he saw. Since then, and until a few years ago, I was his official hair cutter. His white curly hair has always been his most salient feature, and everywhere we go, women comment on how wonderful it is.

My favorite cousin Alex, was especially in love with his locks. She would say so every time we visited her in California each Summer. So for the following trip, I made her a gift. I had collected dad's hair from a hair cutting session, and glued it to a vinyl sheet. It's a hair rug, I said, sure that she would love it. This way, you can see dad's hair all year round. I don't think she was as happy with it as I was, but I thought it was the best gift ever.
